Golubac Fortress 1

Golubac Fortress

Golubac Fortress, built in the 14th century at the entrance to the Djerdap gorge, was one of the most important strategic fortifications on the Danube. It offers a combination of medieval architecture, dramatic landscape and views that open up to the gorge and the Romanian coast.

Experience and impressions

During the tour, you pass through a system of ramparts and towers that follow the configuration of the rock above the Danube. The fortress has nine towers, the most recognizable of which is the 'Hat Tower', built on the very rock above the water.

From the viewpoints you can see the narrowest part of the Danube and the beginning of the Đerdap gorge, while stories about the battles between the Hungarians, the Ottomans and the Serbian despotism give a clear insight into its military significance through centuries.

Preparation and practical notes

Comfortable shoes are recommended as the terrain is rocky. The cliffs can be demanding, so it is important to have good stability when climbing.

The entrance to the fortress is regulated by zones ('green', 'blue', 'red', 'black') that allow different levels of access and viewpoints.

The tour can last from an hour to more, depending on which towers you visit and whether you go through all the zones with a guide. A guided tour is recommended for the full experience.
